Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress forged from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 leads them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a discovery that potentially carries the means to overcome him for good.

The Discovery in the Cavern

After locating Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event went deeper than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

The play reveals the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the mine shaft was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is known about Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held samples of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
