The Actress Expresses Discussing Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Dividing the Country Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she believes it's no longer suitable to speak out countering the Trump government, fearing it could worsen divisive discussions and further divisions across the nation.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Explains Jennifer Lawrence
In a recent interview, she shared, “When Trump was first in office, I felt like I was running around without clear direction. But as we’ve learned, through repeated campaigns, celebrities do not make a difference in any way on who people vote for.”
The actor went on, “Why continue? I’m just expressing personal views on something that’s going to add fuel to a fire tearing the country apart.”
Shifting Views
Lawrence has spoken candidly about voting for both conservative and liberal presidential nominees throughout her life. Brought up by conservative Republicans in Kentucky, she supported the Republican nominee in the 2008 election prior to switching to the Democrats and explaining she realized during President Obama’s term that supporting the GOP was undermining her individual liberties as a woman.
Past Statements
In 2015, she remarked that Trump winning the presidency would be “a disaster” and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 election. More recently, she lent her support to Kamala Harris, “because I believe she’s an excellent choice and I trust that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Jennifer Lawrence was supported by most of Hollywood in her disapproval of Trump as a presidential contender, but the limited influence stars have over the electoral decisions was underscored by his election win.
“This upcoming term feels different,” said she about Trump’s presidency. “Because he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for his first term. He was very clear. And that’s what we chose.”
Latest Film
Lawrence is discussing the drama, director Lynne Ramsay’s movie in which she portrays a new mother who struggles with her mental health in a remote area. Speaking at a interview session for the project in the film festival, the star spoke about the conflict in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s horrifying. What’s taking place is equivalent to a humanitarian crisis and it’s horrible.”
Additional Thoughts
She continued by expressing that she was saddened by “the lack of civility in the discourse of American politics currently and how that is going to be accepted to the younger generation today. It’s going to be typical to them that leaders are untruthful.”
The actor sought to redirect anger about the issue to decision-makers rather than entertainers. “Keep attention on the people in charge,” she remarked, in what many took to be a reference to the declaration endorsed by numerous Hollywood professionals to boycott Israeli film institutions.
Personal Connections
Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim aged 22 for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, is generating Oscar buzz for her performance in Die, My Love. Even though Lynne Ramsay has denied the plot being interpreted as one of postpartum depression and psychosis, Lawrence shared that she connected with parts of her character’s journey after the delivery of her youngest child, not long after filming concluded.
“It was fear regarding my baby,” she commented, “imagining every negative outcome, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was receiving counseling, but I started taking a drug called Zurzuvae and I used it for 14 days and it was effective.”
Professional Experiences
Lawrence also spoke regarding the liberating necessity of completing nude scenes in the film while she was in pregnancy and couldn’t work out.
“It feels nice,” she said, of being forced to set aside self-consciousness. “Truly, I do have moments where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between me and a prostitute? But it isn’t a major concern.”
