Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Makers Concerning Autism Spectrum Allegations

Legal Proceedings
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally campaigning for the United States Senate, accused pharmaceutical manufacturers of withholding safety concerns of Tylenol

The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is suing the producers of Tylenol, claiming the companies hid alleged dangers that the medication posed to pediatric neurological development.

This legal action follows a month after President Donald Trump promoted an unsubstantiated connection between using Tylenol - also known as paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in young ones.

Paxton is suing Johnson & Johnson, which once produced the medication, the exclusive pain medication recommended for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he said they "betrayed America by profiting off of discomfort and marketing drugs without regard for the dangers."

Kenvue asserts there is lacking scientific proof connecting Tylenol to autism.

"These manufacturers lied for decades, deliberately risking millions to boost earnings," the attorney general, from the Republican party, stated.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "very worried by the perpetuation of misinformation on the security of paracetamol and the possible consequences that could have on the welfare of women and children in America."

On its online platform, the company also stated it had "regularly reviewed the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that shows a proven link between consuming acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Organizations representing doctors and health professionals share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has declared paracetamol - the main ingredient in acetaminophen - is a restricted selection for women during pregnancy to treat discomfort and elevated temperature, which can pose serious health risks if not addressed.

"In over twenty years of studies on the consumption of paracetamol in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has definitively established that the usage of acetaminophen in any stage of gestation causes brain development issues in offspring," the association commented.

The lawsuit cites current declarations from the former administration in arguing the medication is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, the former president caused concern from medical authorities when he instructed pregnant women to "resist strongly" not to take Tylenol when ill.

The US Food and Drug Administration then issued a notice that medical professionals should consider limiting the consumption of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a proven link" between the drug and autism in minors has remains unverified.

The Health Department head Kennedy, who supervises the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in April to initiate "extensive scientific investigation" that would determine the cause of autism in a short period.

But experts cautioned that finding a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - believed by scientists to be the result of a intricate combination of inherited and environmental factors - would not be simple.

Autism spectrum disorder is a form of lifelong neurodivergence and disability that affects how persons experience and engage with the world, and is identified using medical professional evaluations.

In his court filing, Paxton - who supports Trump who is seeking federal office - asserts Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "willfully ignored and sought to suppress the research" around acetaminophen and autism.

This legal action attempts to require the corporations "destroy any commercial messaging" that states acetaminophen is secure for women during pregnancy.

This legal action mirrors the complaints of a assembly of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the producers of Tylenol in two years ago.

Judicial authorities rejected the lawsuit, declaring investigations from the family's specialists was lacking definitive proof.
