Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Inclusion in England's Test Series Squad
England have chosen a twelve-player squad just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected squad, showing there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five past matches.
During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to provide some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.
However the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
