Offspring of Ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma Denies Terrorism Accusations as Court Case Begins
The daughter of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related allegations at the commencement of her court case in the harbor city of the city of Durban.
The defendant, forty-three, is being charged over statements she published on online platforms four years ago during violent demonstrations in South Africa that followed the detention of her parent.
A period of anarchy in various areas of the country in July 2021, including looting and intentional burning, left at least 300 individuals deceased and resulted in damage worth an approximate 2.8 billion dollars (2.2 billion pounds).
Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of inciting this unrest and faces allegations of provocation to commit terrorism and public violence.
Context of the Case
The unrest were concentrated in the provinces of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the former president's apprehension for defying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into claims of graft while he was serving as president.
She has consistently denied the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier calling the government's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also repeatedly said the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political grievances with her parent after he founded his own political organization and ran against the ANC.
Support and Case Arguments
This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and kinship targeting" against the previous head of state and his kin.
A few of supporters from her group, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other group representatives were present at the proceedings inside.
The defense has stated that the testimony presented by prosecutors is insufficient and fails to provide concrete grounds for a criminal finding.
