Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
