Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, including a substantial array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
