Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at 89 Years Old.

The Academy Award-nominated actress the celebrated Diane Ladd passed away at the age of 89.

This actor, whose credits included Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, died at her home in California’s Ojai. This announcement was shared via an announcement by her daughter, award-winning actress Laura Dern.

Laura Dern, who starred with her mother in various films such as Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, referred to her as “my wonderful hero as well as my profound gift being my mom”, noting that she was at her bedside when she passed.

“She was an exceptional daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist along with empathetic spirit that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were blessed to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Beginnings and Rise to Fame

Her initial acting years featured supporting roles in television programs like Gunsmoke while that decade saw her starring alongside Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.

In the same year, 1974, she shared the screen alongside Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s praised comedy drama the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination as best supporting actress.

1980s and Beyond

In the 1980s, she appeared in crime thriller Black Widow, a suspense story plus funny follow-up Christmas Vacation and also took part in the sitcom Alice, a sitcom inspired by her earlier movie.

In the subsequent decade, she earned a further supporting actress nomination for her part in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart where she acted as the parent of her real-life daughter Laura Dern’s role. A year later she obtained an additional nod for her performance in Rambling Rose, another movie which included her daughter.

“This was the film which Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she brought me and Laura to London for a special screening and a celebration in our honor,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, taking our hands, and crying, viewing our performance.”

The nineties included parts in the comedy The Cemetery Club joining her again with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, starring John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she acted as the mother of Dern once more. The decade also brought her Emmy nominations for performances in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She persisted in performing with her daughter in comedy drama Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project Inland Empire and Mike White’s dark comedy series the program Enlightened. She was also seen with actress Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and with Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Her later TV roles featured Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.

Writing and Directing

She also authored and directed the comedy film the movie Mrs Munck featuring Diane Ladd and previous spouse Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she noted. “I’m privileged to have directed him on a project. Indeed, I am the sole female in recorded history to direct her ex-husband. I often joke: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, direct your ex-husband.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Family Ties

She was additionally a family member of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact throughout my life”.

During 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a respiratory illness and informed she had just six months to live yet she recovered completely when her daughter shifted her to another medical facility.
